EastEnders viewers believe they know what Ian Beale is up to and the secret could involve Cindy Williams Jr.
The soap legend portrayed by Adam Woodyatt returned to Albert Square in a huge twist last year, after it was revealed that he had reconnected with Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), who was thought to have died in prison.
Since making his return to Walford, Ian has expanded his business and rekindled with the rest of his family, particularly his mother Kathy and son Bobby, who Cindy is clearly struggling to find a soft spot for due to his involvement in her daughter Lucy’s death.
But while she’s surrounded by her remaining children in the Square, Cindy Jr. has taken a long leave of absence from the borough – leaving fans to wonder if Ian was trying to bring her back.

One viewer penned over on X, otherwise known as Twitter: “Think Ian is helping Cindy Junior out but shes told him she doesn’t want to meet her mother.” Another echoed: “i reckon this mystery person ian is texting will be cindy jr or leslie clarke.” A third agreed: “I’m convinced the person Ian is calling is Cindy Jnr.”
The daughter of Cindy Beale and Nick Holland, Cindy Jr. was first introduced in 1998 with Sex Education star Mimi Keene taking over the role in 2013, when the character tried to bond with her half-siblings, Lucy and Peter Beale. A one night stand with TJ Spraggan then led her to discover she was pregnant before she was written out of the programme as Ian sent her back to Devon. Cindy Jr. returned for Lucy Beale’s funeral before making her final exit in 2015.
Cindy Jr. has since been mentioned in the show on multiple occasions, particularly as Cindy Sr’s return from the dead was a hint to viewers the mother-daughter duo could try and bond after spending years apart. Speculation around Cindy Jr’s potential return to the Square comes after some fans believed that Ian’s ex-wife Jane would be the one to come back as Bobby faces his 21st birthday – a milestone Lucy, whom he murdered, never reached.
One fan on Reddit wrote: “Everyone’s thinking Jane, so I’ll throw a wee curveball; Cindy JR. He’s trying to bring her back so he can be the hero and feel closer to Cindy.” Another responded: “I can only see this happening if it’s a recast as Mimi Keene who played Cindy Jr is doing pretty well for herself at the minute.” A third chimed in: “I’m leaning towards Cindy Jr. Trying to convince her to return for Bobby’s birthday and properly face Cindy would explain the shadiness a bit more. Still don’t get why he couldn’t inform Peter, though.”
Recent scenes of the long-running drama have shown Ian Beale take mysterious phone calls and texts but this Thursday (July 10), he admitted to Cindy and Peter (Thomas Law) that he’d been in secret meetings as he intends to run for councillor. A suspicious Peter did some digging off-screen only to find out that Ian had been lying and Thursday’s episode ended with viewers having to wait before finding out more.
In scenes airing next week, however, Ian prepares to leave for a trip when the contents of his suitcase raise suspicions and Cindy goes on the hunt for clues. Cindy will eventually be led to a mystery address with former husband George Knight (Colin Salmon) by her side – what will they find?
