Corrie star Oliver Farnworth shares about ‘d.y.i.n.g twice’ but fans still didn’t notice

Actor Oliver Farnworth is set to make his debut in the Dales as Victoria Sugden’s half-brother, John, but he’s no newbie to the soap scene.

Oliver, who played Andy Carver in Coronation Street from 2014 to 2017, has said that despite his character’s grim fate at the hands of Pat Phelan, these days he doesn’t get recognised for that role.

“I’m not really recognised on the street,” Oliver spilled. “But Andy was great to play. He was a fairly troubled character towards the end. I got to die twice, which was nice. Killed by Pat Phelan, which is a badge of honour.”

Andy rocked up on the cobbles pretending to be Michael Rodwell’s son Gavin – which turned out to be a lie. His storyline ended when he was kidnapped and killed by the notorious serial killer Pat Phelan (portrayed by Connor McIntyre).

Emmerdale marks Oliver’s third soap gig, with one of his earliest acting jobs being on Hollyoaks where he played Will Hackett back in 2006, reports OK!

“Hollyoaks was my first job out of drama school,” Oliver confirmed. “I think I lasted nine months on that, which was good, because I was an absolute psycho in that which was fun to play. Will was an extremely troubled character.”

“That was a particularly steep learning curve because I came out of quite a theatrical training, and then went straight into single camera work. But as a first job, it was brilliant and a lot of fun.”

Emmerdale is set to welcome a new face, John Sugden played by Oliver, who first crosses paths with Victoria (played by Isabel Hodgins) at his mother’s memorial. They instantly clash, but when John’s wheels give up the ghost, he’s stranded in the Dales and Victoria sees an opportunity to connect with her long-lost bro.

Isabel spills the beans on her character’s feelings: “Victoria adores him,” she says. “She thinks, ‘I’ve got a week to bring him round and make him love the idea of being in my family, and to try and make him stay.’ And John is having none of that. He’s straight-talking and sets boundaries – ‘this is where I find myself. I’m not staying. I don’t want any part of this. As nice as you are, thank you, but no, thank you.’ But she’s pleading with him, ‘please love me!’”

Describing his fresh role as a bit of a loner, Oliver drops some hints about John: “There’s a lot to him, and a lot in the initial character breakdown that was hinted at but wasn’t necessarily revealed, because obviously, they don’t like to give too much away too quickly,” he dishes. “And I’m still finding stuff out about him, but really, we find out quite quickly that he’s got a military past, he’s openly gay.”

He’s not one for showing his feelings, according to Oliver. “He doesn’t really go near emotions. Like I said, he doesn’t like to rely on people. I think he’s been hurt in the past, and he’s adamant that won’t happen again.”

Isabel gushed about the new addition to the show, saying: “They are such an important family,” and adding, “We’re dwindling numbers wise. So it’s nice to get another member of the team on board and fly the Sugden flag.”
