Fans of Corrie reckon they’ve cracked where Gail Platt might be going as her departure from the soap looms.

The iconic character, played by Helen Worth, will be leaving after 50 years according to a statement earlier this year from ITV. Gail’s emotionally charged exit storyline had been assured to viewers.

Moreover, the surprise departure is tied to a significant new plot for the Platt family. It was revealed this week that Martin Platt will return as part of Gail’s final story in Coronation Street.

Sean Wilson, who plays Martin Platt, will resume filming today (Wednesday, July 24), six years after his previous appearance in Weatherfield. He will feature on screen in October, revolving around Gail’s exit storyline.

Wilson remarked, “It was great to be invited back to Coro St again, to contribute to Helen’s exit story. We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline.”, reports the Express.

“Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and in a way, I’ll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family.”

“It’s just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe. I’m looking forward to reuniting with my TV family.”

However, speculation has grown amongst fans about how Martin’s return links to Gail’s departure following these revelations. Many theories on Martin’s return being intertwined with Gail’s exit aired on a Coronation Street-focused Facebook fan page.

Fans are buzzing with theories about Martin, who moved to New Zealand in 2018, and Gail’s potential travel plans. One enthusiast speculated: “Maybe they’re just friends and decide to go travelling together! I think Gail would like to return to Thailand.”

Another chimed in: “That’s a good idea, she went to Thailand a few years ago if I remember correctly.” And a third suggested: “It would give her chance to come back as well.”

Gail famously took time off from the cobbles in 2021 for an exotic escape to Thailand.

Sean Wilson, who swapped the soap for a life of cheese-making after leaving in 2005, portrayed Martin for two decades from 1985 to 2005. Martin waved goodbye to Weatherfield for New Zealand in 2018, but not before a heartfelt farewell to David, who struggled with his dad’s move abroad.
