Corrie legend Sean Wilson has opened up about the declining viewership of the ITV soap in recent years following his departure from Weatherfield nearly two decades ago.

The 59 year old actor, who was known for his portrayal of Martin Platt from 1985 to 2005, and again briefly in 2018, believes the falling ratings stem from the writers’ attempts to ‘solve the world’s issues’ rather than focusing on entertainment.

Sean observed: “I think the world of soaps is a different vehicle nowadays. I think I was part of the British soap industry at the best time, the halcyon years when there were 18 or 21 million people watching it.”

He added: “You could walk down the street on a Wednesday or a Friday and you could hear people laughing with their windows open because of the great writing and the great acting was really speaking to the nation. I don’t think it does that so much nowadays”, he told the Daily Star.

Despite this, Sean also acknowledged the rise in channel options, providing people with an increased range of shows to choose from, reports the Express.

The Corrie star expressed: “People don’t have to watch it anymore. They were all segwayed together; you were five minutes from laughing and five minutes from crying. Nowadays it seems very much issue-centric, they’re trying to solve the world’s issues, which they’re not going to do.”

Sean left Coronation Street back in 2005 when a forthcoming storyline involving his character in a relationship with an underage girl was proposed, although he did make a brief comeback in 2018.

Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt on Coronation Street, is rumoured to be making a return to the soap for Helen Worth’s (Gail Platt) exit storyline, according to The Sun.

Gail and Martin were a beloved couple on the show, having started their romance following the death of Gail’s husband Brian Tilsley. They even had a son, David, together.

Since leaving the show, Sean has embarked on a new career path as a cheesemaker. However, he revealed last year that he would consider returning to the cobbles.

“I made it clear that I could be turned, but now it’s 2023 and nothing has happened,” he shared with the Manchester Evening News.

“The writers decided to send me to New Zealand, so maybe they’re trying to tell me something. I am busy writing books, but of course, I would give it some thought.”

In addition to Sean Wilson’s comments on the decline of viewership in Coronation Street, other factors may also be at play. One important aspect to consider is the changing landscape of television and media consumption. With the rise of streaming services and on-demand programming, traditional soap operas like Coronation Street may be facing increased competition for viewers’ attention. Furthermore, the evolution of audience preferences and tastes could also contribute to the lower ratings of the show. As Sean noted, the focus on addressing societal issues in the storylines may not resonate as strongly with viewers as the character-driven, emotionally engaging plots of the past. It’s worth exploring how Coronation Street can adapt to these changing dynamics to regain its popularity and connect with modern audiences. Perhaps a return to the core elements that made the show a success in the past, such as strong character development, compelling relationships, and engaging drama, could help revitalize the series. Additionally, leveraging social media and digital platforms to engage with fans and create buzz around upcoming storylines could also be a strategic move to attract new viewers and retain existing ones. By striking a balance between addressing relevant issues and delivering captivating entertainment, Coronation Street may be able to overcome its current challenges and thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of television.
