Coronation Street fans were on the edge of their seats during Monday night’s episode,
as Dee-Dee Bailey (portrayed by Channique Sterling-Brown) edged closer to unmasking the dark secrets of her fiance, Joel Deering (played by Calum Lill).
The plot thickened following revelations that Joel was behind Lauren Bolton’s (acted by Cait Fitton) vanishing, having left her for dead previously.
Complications escalated when Lauren returned to Weatherfield, pregnant and unaware that Joel had tried to end her pregnancy by drugging her,
only for his plan to backfire with Lauren falling into labour prematurely, yet the baby miraculously survived.
Increasingly suspicious, Dee-Dee found inconsistencies in Joel’s story about a necklace he claimed was purchased for Lauren earlier.
During the dramatic episode, Dee-Dee put the pieces together upon discovering where Joel bought the jewellery.
Tensions peaked at the hospital when Dee-Dee learned that not only was Joel the father of Lauren’s child but that he was present during the labor.
Unbeknownst to both Lauren and Dee-Dee, Joel was eavesdropping outside the hospital room, overhearing everything they discussed, reports the Manchester Evening News.
At a poignant moment after Lauren recounted her inability to seek help while going into labour, a concerned Dee-Dee probed: “Knowing the power you would have over him for the rest of his life…Lauren, could Joel have given you something to make you go into labour?”
“What? ” Lauren replied, visibly shocked as Dee-Dee questioned: “Could he have given you something?”
As doubts crept into her mind, Lauren had an eerie flashback of Joel preparing her a meal earlier that day and intently observing her as she ate. Not long after that, labour pains began.
Their concerns about Joel’s intentions propelled Dee-Dee and Lauren to the police station to file a report against him. Yet, upon their arrival, they discovered Joel had already presented himself to the authorities with a startling confession: He had been intimate with Lauren “before she disappeared”.
When asked why he hadn’t shared this crucial information earlier, Joel conceded, vulnerably stating, “Mate, I didn’t want my fiance finding out.”
Tensions peaked at the episode’s cliffhanger as Joel was being apprehended by DS Swain (played by Victoria Myers). The arrest took a dramatic twist when Kit Green (acted by Jacob Roberts) interrupted, claiming Joel had suggested Lauren ingested abortion medication.
Joel doggedly deflected the accusations onto Lauren, while she tearfully denied harming their baby, passionately crying out, “You’re a liar, you’re a liar.”
Despite the emotionally charged scene, DS Swain remained duty-bound and solemnly declared: “I am sorry to do this, but I am going to have to ask you a few more questions under caution.”
The explosive episode spurred a frenzy on social media, where eager fans eagerly exchanged predictions and opinions on what revelations the next instalment might hold.
