Since John Sugden first appeared on ITV’s Emmerdale last month, his curious character, played by Oliver Farnworth, has stirred up speculation among fans.
Fans have been eagerly trying to work out mysterious John’s backstory since he arrived in the ITV fictional village.
The shocking family twist saw Victoria Sugden (played by Isabel Hodgins) gain a half-brother.
He was introduced in Emmerdale when Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) attended John’s mum, Barbara’s, funeral and bumped into him.
It was then revealed that Victoria and John shared the same father, Jack Sugden.
While not planning to stick around, John’s van broke down, causing him to reluctantly seek help in the village.
But with the van not having a quick fix, he has been forced to stick around longer than he had hoped, with Victoria eager to start a relationship with her long lost sibling. Since John’s options for a roof above his head being limited, he agreed to move in with his sister and even took on a job working for Cain at the farm.
This week, fans have been sent into a frenzy after newcomer John was shown hiding some dog tags that had the name Aidan Moore on them. Express.co.uk have explored some of the theories that fans have come up with – From being an imposter to a cold blooded killer and even the idea of a love interest.
John is an imposter
Fans believed they’d worked out who John really was, and that he could actually be Aidan pretending to be the missing part of the Sugden clan. After seeing the dog tags, fans wondered if Aidan was pretending to be John, someone he knew, to get out of the army.
Another thing that caused fans to think John might not be quite who is says he is was what he said to his alleged sister, Victoria. In recent episodes, while she has been working hard trying to get to know him, John keeps pushing her away.
This last week, the audience watched on as he snapped and was pretty cold with her, telling her: “I’m not Harry’s uncle or your brother, I’m just someone who is passing through.”
John Sugden is hiding a criminal past
Some fans thought that the dog tags could be hiding a secret criminal past of John’s. Some had him down as a con man while others fancied him as a killer.
Posting to X/Twitter, one user thought that John could be linked to his brother Robert Sugden, having met in jail. Robert is currently locked up for killing Victoria’s rapist. The user asked: “Is John a conman who knew Robert in jail? #emmerdale.”
But others thought that John could be hiding a much darker past and has nabbed the dog tags as a trophy after making a kill. Another social media user theorised: “Who’s Aiden Moore? John ex lover or has he killed aiden and taken the dog tag?”
Aidan is an ex lover of John’s
A popular theory among fans has been that Aidan Moore could be a past lover of Johns. Speaking about the character’s sexual orientation and current relationship status at a press day, Emmerdale actor Oliver told the Express: “We find out quite quickly that he’s got a military past and is openly gay.
“He is very much a lone wolf. I think over the years, he’s kind of really put walls up and not let anyone in. That’s a method of self-preservation, I think.”
Keeping this in mind, fans have come to the conclusion that John and Aidan must have had some sort of romance. Posting theories online, one viewer suggested: “One of four things Aiden Moore could be in my opinion. His Ex. His wonderfully kind stepdad & it’s why he has no interest in the Sugden’s cause he had a guy that stepped up.
“His abusive stepdad & he is mad daddy dreariest left them in that position. His real name #Emmerdale.”
Another questioned: “Ex or dead bf? Interesting…” While a third said: “Ooh Aiden Moore, I wonder who that was. A previous fling of John’s maybe. #Emmerdale.”
