Coronation Street fans have made an emotional appeal to the show’s producers to conclude a particularly harrowing plot.
Viewers of the popular ITV soap are urging scriptwriters to grant Paul Foreman, who is grappling with Motor Neurone Disease, a dignified exit.
The character, portrayed by actor Peter Ash, received his diagnosis in 2023 and has since experienced a swift decline in health.
Paul’s condition has progressed to the point where he can no longer walk due to muscle weakness, and he has been advised that it is unsafe for him to leave his home,
which he shares with his spouse Billy. The once vibrant Paul is now resorting to using AI technology for communication as the disease takes its toll.
Throughout his ordeal, Paul has considered euthanasia, expressing a desire to pass away on his own terms rather than witness his health continue to fade.
However, as his departure from the show nears, viewers are expressing frustration at the prolonged nature of the storyline, arguing that Paul should be allowed to pass away with dignity.
Social media has become a platform for fans to voice their opinions, with one viewer commenting: “Please wind this storyline up now, I liked Paul’s character and sad to see him go but this is just getting drawn out now, call it a day.”, reports the Mirror.
Another added: “Brilliant opportunity to end it last week on a really good episode but now it feels like it’s getting dragged.”
One viewer commented: “It amazes me how long this storyline has been dragged out for. Any longer and the original script will receive a silver jubilee.”
Recently, fans saw Paul’s husband, Billy, portrayed by Daniel Brocklebank, take him on his final outing from their flat to create some lasting memories.
The couple visited the church where they tied the knot, spent quality time with their loved ones, and made a trip to the Rovers Return for one last pint together. Last month, Peter disclosed to the Mirror about his impending departure from the soap opera, six years after he first graced the famous cobbles.
He shared: “It was amazing to film but tough because it was so emotional and hard but a beautiful episode and it was beautifully written. I’m looking forward to seeing that, it was great to work on. I’ll be sad to go but so grateful to be trusted with that storyline. It’s mixed emotions.”
Peter also dropped a hint that his character’s demise on screen is imminent – and seemed to inadvertently reveal when it will occur. He said: “People have reacted amazingly to it. The response has been fantastic. It’s been tough, it’s been tiring. It’s been a long road but we’re nearly at the end now. I’m so grateful to be part of the storyline and raise awareness.”
In an upcoming special episode, viewers will witness a poignant focus on Paul and Billy’s love story. Discussing his departure from the show, he shared: “Absolutely, yeah, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword, you know? Really sad to go, but like, really grateful that they trusted me with this storyline. So, some mixed emotions about leaving. Working with Daniel from day one has been amazing. We have so much fun. And yeah, obviously because he has a personal connection to MND, he’s a great source of information and insight. And I’ll very much miss working with him.”
